Guilty Verdict in 2024 Killing
CROCKETT, TEXAS — The verdict was delivered Friday after a weeklong trial prosecuted by the Texas Attorney General’s Office. Jurors concluded that Steveson burglarized Allen’s home on the night of May 21, 2024, and violently assaulted him, causing fatal injuries to his head and face.
Allen, 78, was discovered deceased inside his home by family members. Investigators quickly identified Steveson as a person of interest, later charging him with Capital Murder tied to the burglary and assault.
Allen was well known throughout the community, especially at Crockett Trade Days, where he sold wooden tool handles, antiques, and assorted trinkets. Police noted that many residents recognized him as a friendly, familiar presence.
His death in 2024 deeply affected those who knew him, and Friday’s verdict marks a significant moment of closure for many in the community.
According to Crockett Police, Steveson had a lengthy criminal record dating back to the 1970s, including convictions in Trinity County for sexual assault and murder. He served several years in prison and was on parole at the time of Allen’s killing.
However, jurors were not informed of Steveson’s prior convictions or parole status, as those details were not admissible during the trial.
Crockett Police in a statement credited the outcome to “countless hours” of investigative work, evidence collection, interviews, and collaboration with state prosecutors. The department emphasized the coordinated effort required to bring the case to trial and secure a conviction.
While the verdict cannot undo the loss, police said it brings “a measure of justice and accountability” for Allen’s family. They expressed hope that the decision offers some comfort to loved ones as they continue to grieve.
