Human Remains Found

NEW CANEY, Texas — The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office says human remains discovered Sunday in a wooded area near Oak Knoll are believed to be those of Maria Ortiz, a New Caney woman who had been missing since July.

Deputies, working alongside Montgomery County Search and Rescue, located the remains in a wooded area close to Ortiz’s residence — the same area where she was last seen. While investigators are awaiting dental record confirmation expected later this week, preliminary findings indicate the remains are consistent with Ortiz.

Ortiz was reported missing on July 20, 2026, after leaving her home on foot. Her family told investigators she suffered from memory issues and periods of confusion, prompting an extensive search effort that continued for weeks.

Since her disappearance, the Sheriff’s Office coordinated searches with Texas Search and Rescue, Texas EquuSearch, The Call Service, Montgomery County Search and Rescue, and numerous volunteers, family members, and friends who assisted in the effort.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, no foul play is suspected at this time. Early investigative information suggests Ortiz may have died of natural causes in the wooded area, though the official cause and manner of death remain under investigation.

Detectives from the Persons Crimes Unit, Major Crimes Unit, and Crime Scene Investigations responded to the scene Sunday and continue to process evidence.

In a statement, the Sheriff’s Office extended condolences to Ortiz’s family, saying that while the discovery was not the outcome anyone hoped for, they hope the recovery “brings her family some measure of peace.” Officials also thanked partner agencies, volunteers, and media outlets for sharing information and supporting the search.
