Man Convicted of Onalaska Murder
LIVINGSTON, TEXAS— Polk County Jury Finds David Eugene Stimmell Guilty of Murder in 2024 Shooting
A Polk County jury returned a guilty verdict on June 19, 2026, finding David Eugene Stimmell responsible for the death of James McClanahan following a confrontation that turned deadly in Onalaska on January 2, 2024.
According to evidence presented at trial, an altercation at a residence escalated into a shooting that claimed McClanahan’s life. Jurors heard testimony from eyewitnesses, law enforcement officers, and expert witnesses, all detailing the events leading up to the shooting and the actions taken during the incident.
The investigation was led by Detective Javier Segura of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, with support from the Texas Rangers and additional law enforcement personnel. Prosecutors said the combined investigative work was critical in bringing the case to trial.
The State of Texas was represented by Criminal District Attorney Shelly Sitton, Assistant District Attorney Scott Ferguson, and Assistant District Attorney Anthony Dodson.
District Attorney Sitton praised the collaborative effort behind the conviction, stating that the outcome reflects the “teamwork, dedication, and professionalism” of investigators, prosecutors, paralegals, and victim assistance staff. She emphasized that her office, alongside the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, remains committed to holding violent offenders accountable and ensuring community safety.
Sitton also expressed appreciation for Detective Segura, the Sheriff’s Office, Texas Ranger Stanzel, court staff, and the jurors who served throughout the lengthy trial.
Sentencing is scheduled for July 30, 2026, before Judge Travis Kitchens, Jr. in the 258th Judicial District Court.
