SpaceX, Tesla Announce Massive Terafab Semiconductor Facility Between Huntsville And College Station

GRIMES COUNTY, TEXAS — SpaceX and Tesla confirmed Thursday that they will build Terafab, a sprawling advanced semiconductor manufacturing complex in Grimes County, marking one of the largest chip‑production investments ever announced in the United States.

The project, described by the companies as “the most epic chip‑building effort in the world”, is intended to close a widening gap between global semiconductor supply and the rapidly growing compute demands of SpaceX and Tesla hardware. Together, the companies expect their future chip needs to exceed 1 terawatt of compute, a level they say far surpasses what the current global market can provide.

Terafab will be a vertically integrated semiconductor factory with more than 100 million square feet of planned manufacturing space. The facility will produce advanced logic and memory chips, along with packaging and testing operations, all on the same site. SpaceX and Tesla say this unified approach will allow “fast, recursive improvements” and accelerate deployment of new compute hardware.

The chips produced at Terafab will support a wide range of next‑generation technologies, including Tesla’s Optimus humanoid robots, autonomous Cybercab vehicles, and high‑power processors for SpaceX’s planned space‑based data centers.

The announcement comes amid ongoing national efforts to expand domestic semiconductor production. With much of the world’s chip manufacturing still concentrated overseas, U.S. officials have pushed for increased domestic capacity to support AI, aerospace, defense, and advanced manufacturing sectors. SpaceX and Tesla say Terafab aligns with that push by establishing a major new high‑end fabrication hub in Texas.

Texas has become a central pillar of SpaceX’s operations, with major sites in Starbase, Bastrop, and McGregor. According to the company, its Texas footprint has generated more than 56,000 direct and indirect jobs and over $28 billion in estimated economic impact since 2024.

The initial phase of Terafab will require approximately $16.8 billion in capital investment from SpaceX and Tesla. At least 3,000 employees will staff the facility, with the companies expecting a majority of hires to come from Grimes County and neighboring Brazos County, consistent with hiring trends at their other Texas sites, where 60% to 80% of new employees are local residents.

Grimes County’s infrastructure access, available land, and proximity to major Texas markets were cited as key factors in the site selection. The companies say the project will create significant opportunities for skilled trades, construction workers, suppliers, contractors, and long‑term technical workforce development. SpaceX and Tesla plan to work with local schools and workforce organizations to build training pathways tailored to community needs.

SpaceX and Tesla emphasized environmental stewardship in the announcement, outlining several measures planned for the Terafab site. These include using water from Gibbons Creek Reservoir rather than local groundwater, building on‑site wastewater treatment facilities, implementing water‑reuse systems, and managing hazardous materials in compliance with, and aiming to exceed, all applicable regulations.

The companies framed Terafab as a foundational step toward maintaining U.S. leadership in space, AI, and advanced manufacturing. In the press release, SpaceX and Tesla said that operating the largest chip‑manufacturing facility on Earth is part of a long‑term vision in which “future humans can compete over building the largest facilities in the solar system, and eventually the galaxy.”

With construction plans now public, SpaceX and Tesla are encouraging engineers, technicians, and skilled trades workers to apply, saying those who join Terafab will be helping “build an exciting future.”
