Update: Investigation Leads to Additional Charges for Jai’keese Barnes.
Suspect now faces Felony Charges.
HUNTSVILLE, TEXAS – The Huntsville Police Department is investigating a report of alleged shots fired Wednesday afternoon in the area of 18th Street and Avenue O, which prompted a significant law‑enforcement response and use of SWAT team.
According to the Huntsville Police Department, officers were dispatched to the area at approximately 12:15 PM after receiving reports of alleged gunfire in the neighborhood. When officers arrived, they began securing the scene and initiating a criminal investigation to determine what occurred and whether anyone was injured.
Police described the situation as active and ongoing, with a heavy police presence concentrated around the intersection. Investigators remained on scene through the afternoon gathering evidence and interviewing individuals in the area.
A male and female in the area were originally taken into custody. Jai’keese Barnes was arrested for resisting arrest, search, or transport. Shaneka Sykes was arrested for interfering with the duties of a public servant. Sykes was also charged with resisting arrest, search, or transport. Both suspects were booked into the Walker County Jail and await a bond hearing.
As a precaution, HPD asked the public to avoid the area until officers complete their work. The Department detained a person of interest, who was later identified as Jai’keese Barnes.
On Friday, May 29,2026, Jai’keese Barnes was charged with Deadly Conduct and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon, stemming from the Huntsville Police investigation of the alleged shots fired near 18th Street and Avenue O.
All suspects are innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
