HUNTSVILLE, TEXAS — Sam Houston State University is celebrating a historic milestone this fall after welcoming the largest first time freshman class in its history. As of Aug. 19, the first day of classes, SHSU recorded 3,567 first‑time freshmen, an 8.7 percent increase over Fall 2025 and the highest freshman total ever reported by the university.
The surge reflects SHSU’s ongoing efforts to expand access to higher education and strengthen engagement with prospective students across Texas and beyond. University officials say the growth is tied to targeted outreach, expanded financial pathways, and a continued emphasis on showcasing SHSU’s academic programs and student experience.
