Area Sees Three Drowning Deaths and a Near Drownings Over Holiday Weekend
HARRIS COUNTY — Authorities are investigating a series of tragic water‑related incidents over the July 4th weekend that left two children dead, one adult deceased, and another child hospitalized in serious condition.
Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called to the 900 block of Spring Lakes Haven Drive, near Louetta Road and W. Hardy Road, after reports of two people in a neighborhood pond today. A 74‑year‑old women and a 2‑year‑old child were found unresponsive and were rushed to nearby hospitals. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said crime scene investigators and detectives are reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident. No additional details have been released.
In a separate update Saturday evening, Sheriff Gonzalez reported two additional incident involving young children.
- In one case, deputies and first responders were able to rescue the child, who remains hospitalized in serious condition.
- In the second incident, despite rapid intervention from deputies, EMS, fire crews, and hospital staff, the child did not survive.
Gonzalez praised the first responders who “ran toward these emergencies,” noting the emotional toll such calls take on public safety personnel.
With large holiday gatherings and increased outdoor activity, officials are urging residents to practice strict water safety.
Sheriff Gonzalez reminded families that children should never be left unsupervised near pools, ponds, lakes, bathtubs, or any body of water, even briefly. Barriers, active supervision, and quick access to flotation devices can prevent tragedies.
