Fire Chief Dies After Medical Emergency On Duty
ANDERSON COUNTY TEXAS — The Slocum Volunteer Fire Department is mourning the loss of Fire Safety Chief Dan Hernandez, who died earlier today after suffering a medical emergency earlier in the week while on an emergency call. He had been hospitalized in Palestine since the incident and passed away surrounded by family, friends, and fellow firefighters.
According to the department, Hernandez’s death marks his final call and End of Watch, a solemn tradition honoring firefighters who die in the line of duty or while serving their community.
The department described Hernandez as a firefighter who consistently demonstrated courage, compassion, and dedication. Whether responding to emergencies, supporting fellow firefighters, or helping community members in need, he was known for his steady presence and willingness to serve.
His colleagues said Hernandez embodied the best qualities of a volunteer firefighter, noting that his commitment to protecting the community set a standard for others in the department.
In its statement, the Slocum Volunteer Fire Department said Hernandez’s passing leaves an immeasurable void within the agency and throughout the community he proudly served. Members emphasized that his influence extended far beyond emergency calls, shaping the department through mentorship, leadership, and kindness.
Hernandez is survived by his wife Valerie, his son Trey, and his grandsons Brayden and Bradley, along with extended family, friends, and colleagues. The department is asking the community to keep them in their thoughts and prayers during what it called an “incredibly difficult time.”
The department said Hernandez will be deeply missed, but his dedication and kindness will not be forgotten. His service, they added, will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him and serving alongside him.
