Predator Gets 50 Years In TDCJ

CONROE, TEXAS — A Montgomery County jury has sentenced Bernabe Mendiola, 53, to 50 years in prison without the possibility of parole after finding him guilty of Continuous Sexual Abuse of a Young Child following a four‑day trial in the 221st District Court.

Jurors returned their guilty verdict on August 20, 2026, concluding a trial that began August 17 before Judge Lisa Michalk. Judge Michalk immediately imposed the sentence: 50 years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, no parole eligibility.

The conviction stems from years of abuse that began after Mendiola inserted himself into a child’s life in late 2020, cultivating a relationship that allowed him to pose as a father figure. Prosecutors said he used that trust to sexually abuse the child repeatedly while the child was under 14.

According to the case record, Mendiola groomed the child to believe the abuse was normal, telling him, “This is what dads do to their sons.” The manipulation continued for years until the child’s mother noticed significant behavioral changes in 2023, sadness, anger, and signs something was deeply wrong.

Her refusal to ignore those changes ultimately led to the disclosure, investigation, and prosecution. Assistant District Attorney Cassie Marchesani prosecuted the case. Marchesani said the child’s courage was central to the outcome: “It took extraordinary courage for this young boy to recognize that lie, speak the truth, and face the man who abused him. This sentence belongs, in no small part, to a child who found the courage to be heard.”

District Attorney Mike Holley said Mendiola’s conduct was deliberate and predatory, “He deliberately built that trust and then weaponized it to sexually abuse a child for years. That is calculated, predatory behavior.”
