Man Charged With Murder In Grimes County
GRIMES COUNTY, TEXAS — A fatal shooting in the Keith community Tuesday evening has led to murder and aggravated assault charges, according to the Grimes County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies were dispatched at approximately 5 p.m. on September 22, 2026, after a 911 caller reported a disturbance and possible shooting in the Keith area. When deputies arrived, they found one deceased male, identified as Vicente Yanez, at the scene. A second male was also located and detained while investigators worked to determine what had occurred.
According to investigators, evidence gathered at the scene and during interviews allegedly revealed that Richard Butterworth III had been armed with a pistol when he became involved in a physical altercation with Yanez. During that confrontation, Butterworth allegedly fired the weapon, fatally striking Yanez.
All individuals present were transported to the Grimes County Sheriff’s Office for interviews as investigators continued collecting statements, physical evidence, and documentation related to the incident.
Following the investigation, authorities charged Richard Butterworth III with Murder and two counts of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon. He is currently being held in the Grimes County Jail.
The Sheriff’s Office confirmed that next of kin have been notified and extended condolences to the family and loved ones of Vicente Yanez.
The case remains active and ongoing as investigators continue processing evidence and conducting follow‑up interviews. The Sheriff’s Office thanked the Texas Department of Public Safety, Navasota Police Department, and Grimes County Constable Precinct 1 for assisting at the scene.
All suspects are innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
