Area Woman Dies From West Nile Virus
CONROE, TEXAS — Montgomery County has recorded its first West Nile Virus related death of 2026, according to the Montgomery County Public Health Department, which confirmed the case after laboratory verification from the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS).
The patient was a woman in her 90s who lived in the 77304 zip code. The zip code areas include West Conroe, Panorama Village, and areas near Lake Conroe.
The deceased woman had been diagnosed with West Nile neuroinvasive disease, the most severe form of West Nile Virus (WNV), which can lead to inflammation of the brain and spinal cord and carries a significantly higher risk of fatal outcomes.
According to the CDC, neuroinvasive disease occurs in fewer than 1% of infections, but among those who develop it, about 1 in 10 cases are fatal.
