Huntsville, Texas – The Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) announced that a \u201ccadet\u201d lost her life in the line of duty at the Robertson Unit Training Center in Abilene, Texas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The officer was identified as 46 year old Michelle Strube.\u00a0\u00a0The agency states she died during \u201croutine pre-service training\u201d on August 19, 2024.\u00a0\u00a0Pre-service training is a six-week course completed by all officers prior to starting at their unit of assignment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cCadet Strube committed to protecting and serving the state of Texas. There is no higher calling than that,\u201d Texas Board of Criminal Justice Chairman Eric Nichols said. \u201cOur prayers are with her family, friends and academy cohort during this difficult time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cTDCJ mourns, along with her family, Cadet Strube who was at the start of her career as a Correctional Officer,\u201d TDCJ Executive Director Bryan Collier said. \u201cHer dedication will be remembered with profound respect and gratitude.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The agency was vague on the cause of death and will not respond to our media inquiries. The agency\u2019s public social media release would only refer to Strube\u2019s title as \u201ccadet\u201d instead of the standard \u201cCorrection Officer I\u201d title given to officers during their training period. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In Texas the survivors of correctional officers who die in the line of duty are entitled to a $500,000 line of duty death benefit.
