{"id":2109,"date":"2026-10-02T14:44:33","date_gmt":"2026-10-02T14:44:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hvhappens.com\/?p=2109"},"modified":"2026-10-02T14:44:33","modified_gmt":"2026-10-02T14:44:33","slug":"texas-delegation-pushes-for-u-s-space-academy-conroe-area-positioned-as-a-leading-candidate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hvhappens.com\/index.php\/2026\/10\/02\/texas-delegation-pushes-for-u-s-space-academy-conroe-area-positioned-as-a-leading-candidate\/","title":{"rendered":"Texas Delegation Pushes for U.S. Space Academy; Conroe Area Positioned as a Leading Candidate"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>WASHINGTON \u2014 A coalition of Texas lawmakers is urging federal officials to select Texas and potentially the rapidly growing Conroe region, as the home of the proposed United States Space Academy, arguing the state\u2019s unmatched aerospace infrastructure makes it the strongest contender in the nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a letter sent to the Presidential Commission on the United States Space Academy, Senators Ted Cruz and John Cornyn, House Science, Space, and Technology Committee Chairman Brian Babin, and Congressman Michael Cloud outlined why Texas is uniquely suited to host the institution that will train future space explorers, operators, engineers, and Space Force Guardians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The delegation emphasized that Texas already anchors America\u2019s human spaceflight program and that placing the academy elsewhere would require rebuilding capabilities the nation has spent more than six decades developing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chairman Brian Babin highlighted the state\u2019s long standing leadership in space operations, pointing to NASA\u2019s Johnson Space Center, home to Mission Control and the astronaut corps. \u201cTexas brings together the experience, infrastructure, talent, and innovation that continue to move America forward,\u201d Babin said, adding that the Space Academy would strengthen U.S. exploration and defense capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Congressman Michael Cloud noted Texas\u2019s operational depth and workforce strength. \u201cFor over 60 years, when American astronauts need to reach home base, they make the same call: \u2018Houston\u2019,\u201d Cloud said. He cited the state\u2019s more than 148,000 aerospace professionals and its growing commercial space sector as key advantages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why Texas and Why the Conroe area?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The letter outlines several factors that position Texas as a top contender:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>NASA\u2019s Johnson Space Center \u2014 Mission Control, astronaut training, and human spaceflight operations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A massive aerospace workforce \u2014 more than 148,000 professionals across 1,400 companies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Major commercial space presence \u2014 SpaceX, Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Blue Origin, Axiom Space, Firefly, Intuitive Machines.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Academic strength \u2014 Texas A&amp;M\u2019s Space Institute and over $5 billion in annual aerospace related research statewide.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>National security infrastructure \u2014 Space Force training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland and leadership courses at Texas A&amp;M.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Within this statewide landscape, the Conroe area has emerged as a top contender for the academy, according to officials familiar with early site discussions. Conroe\u2019s proximity to Houston\u2019s aerospace corridor, available land for federal development, and expanding technology and defense footprint make it one of the most strategically positioned regions in Texas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Presidential Commission is currently reviewing proposals and will deliver recommendations to the White House after completing its 120 day assessment.
