HUNTSVILLE, TEXAS — On August 24, 2026, Judge Tracy Sorensen of the 278th District Court sentenced Ricardo Abril to two life sentences after he pled guilty to two counts of Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child. Abril had originally been charged with Continuous Sexual Abuse of a Child Under 14, but chose to plead guilty and have the judge assess his punishment.

Walker County District Attorney Will Durham said the ruling ensures accountability and was thankful, “for the Court’s sentence and for the measure of justice it provides to this victim and our community.”

During the sentencing hearing, prosecutors presented evidence detailing the abuse, including testimony from the victim. She told the court that Abril groomed and sexually abused her for approximately nine years, beginning when she was four years old. The abuse ended only after she disclosed it to a parent, though the crimes were not reported to law enforcement until several years later.

The victim also testified that members of Abril’s family attempted to influence her future statements and encouraged her to lie to investigators in an effort to keep Abril out of prison.

Her mother described the lasting emotional and psychological impact the abuse has had on the victim and their family.

Detective Keith Sarraf of the Huntsville Police Department testified about the department’s investigation and confirmed that Abril ultimately confessed.

The Walker County District Attorney’s Office said the sentence ensures Abril will never again have access to children and reinforces the county’s commitment to supporting victims of child abuse.
