{"id":1351,"date":"2026-06-11T02:16:13","date_gmt":"2026-06-11T02:16:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hvhappens.com\/?p=1351"},"modified":"2026-06-11T02:16:14","modified_gmt":"2026-06-11T02:16:14","slug":"governor-abbott-orders-puc-ercot-to-shield-texans-from-data-center-costs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hvhappens.com\/index.php\/2026\/06\/11\/governor-abbott-orders-puc-ercot-to-shield-texans-from-data-center-costs\/","title":{"rendered":"Governor Abbott Orders PUC, ERCOT To Shield Texans From Data Center Costs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>By Staff Wtiter<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AUSTIN, TEXAS &#8211; Governor Greg Abbott has directed the Public Utility Commission of Texas and the Electric Reliability Council of Texas to take immediate regulatory action to prevent residential electricity customers from absorbing the financial impact of the state\u2019s rapidly expanding data\u2011center industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a letter sent to PUC Chairman Thomas Gleeson and ERCOT CEO Pablo Vegas, the Governor said data\u2011center growth must not come at the expense of Texas households or local communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cData centers must operate in ways that reduce costs for residential electricity customers, do not drain water needed for our communities, and take into consideration the needs of our neighborhoods,\u201d Abbott wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Key Directives Issued<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Full Funding of Infrastructure &#8211; The PUC must require data centers to pay the entire cost of new electric infrastructure needed to power their facilities. Abbott said this step is necessary to ensure those expenses are not shifted onto residential ratepayers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Joint PUC-ERCOT Review &#8211; The two agencies must identify additional actions within their authority to protect residential and small\u2011business customers. A joint memorandum outlining those measures is due to the Governor\u2019s Office by July 17, 2026.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Transmission Cost Relief \u2014 The PUC must begin formal action to reduce transmission costs for residential customers no later than July 31, 2026.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Governor Abbott also signaled he will work with lawmakers next session to codify long\u2011term protections.
