NEW CANEY, Texas \u2014 Federal authorities have now charged Juan Ayala\u2011Montero, 60, following Saturday\u2019s active\u2011shooter incident in the Kings Colony subdivision. According to the Houston FBI, Ayala\u2011Montero has been charged with being an illegal alien in possession of a firearm, a federal offense that carries significant penalties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Investigators say Ayala\u2011Montero was unlawfully residing in the United States and was prohibited from possessing firearms. During the investigation, agents recovered an AR\u2011style rifle with a scope from his bedroom. The FBI Houston Field Office confirmed it assisted the Montgomery County Sheriff\u2019s Office throughout the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The incident began around 4:20 p.m. when multiple 911 callers reported an individual firing a rifle in the 19000 block of Nottingham Drive. Deputies arriving on scene reported hearing continued gunfire. Witnesses told investigators that Ayala\u2011Montero allegedly fired at a group of neighbors during an argument, striking one person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A 17\u2011year\u2011old male suffered a non\u2011life\u2011threatening gunshot wound, was transported to a local hospital, treated, and released. Another individual sustained minor injuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After the initial gunfire, Ayala\u2011Montero barricaded himself inside a residence. The MCSO SWAT Team was activated, and after a containment operation lasting several hours, the suspect surrendered without further incident. The scene was declared secure around 7:30 p.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ayala\u2011Montero was originally booked into the Montgomery County Jail on Felony Deadly Conduct \u2013 Discharging a Firearm, with bond set at $80,000. Sheriff\u2019s officials reported that he has a criminal history, had previously been deported, and currently has an ICE detainer in place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Federal prosecutors have now added charges related to his immigration status and firearm possession. Additional charges remain possible as the investigation continues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Detectives with the Major Crimes Unit and Crime Scene Investigators are continuing to process evidence and interview witnesses. Residents reported shots being fired in multiple directions, and investigators are working to determine the full sequence of events leading up to the shooting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
