Huntsville, Texas- After recent heavy downpours in the Huntsville area, local wildlife has become more active. Residents are reminded to use caution when traveling or walking near roadways, as animal including snakes and turtle often emerge after significant rainfall to seek warmth and dry ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Early this morning, a River Cooter Turtle was safely ushered away from a roadway after being spotted crossing near a gravel shoulder. The turtle\u2019s intricate shell markings and orange-edged carapace are characteristic of this freshwater species, commonly found in rivers, ponds, and wetlands throughout East Texas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Heavy rains can temporarily flood low-lying habitats, prompting turtles and other wildlife to move to higher ground. Roadways often become unintended migration routes, increasing the risk of vehicle encounters. Wildlife experts advise motorists to slow down and remain alert, especially in rural or wooded areas following storms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
